Abstract

Currently, we have seen an increase in the availability of electronic media in the home environment, where new electronic media technologies (TV, computers, wireless, broadband, multifunctional equipment and interactive video games) are an integral part of the home and are used daily by individuals, which implies a reduction in the opportunities for physical activities at home and more time in sedentary behaviors, reducing the total energy expenditure. Thus, the objective of this essay is to present, in reflection, the factors associated with the practice of physical activity throughout life, in view of different determinants of physical activity. It was a reflective essay that provided us with a broad analysis of sedentary behaviors. Thus, children are daily exposed to multiple devices that can stimulate sedentary behaviors, or physical activity, and the home environment is likely to influence this choice. Theories suggest that the definition of sedentary or active behavior depends in part on the ease of access to physical or sedentary activity in the home and neighborhood. In relation to the different stages of life, we observed a greater amount and use of equipment for physical activity in childhood, except skateboarding and "fitness" equipment than in adolescents and adults. Our results seem to contribute to the development of health promotion programs at different stages of our lives, thus requiring a greater understanding of transience throughout the stages of life.
